When it is time to renovate the bathroom, you have options when it comes to updating your old bathtub or shower. Primarily, you can either replace the unit, have it relined, or have it refinished with factory-quality paint.

Replacing

Initially, the cost of replacing may seem a viable option because of the low initial cost of a replacement tub or shower. Fiberglass bathtubs can be as little as $500 dollars at your local home improvement store. However, you must take these other factors into account for the total cost of bathtub replacement:

  • Finding and selecting a contractor
  • Demolition, hauling, and landfill fees of old bathtub
  • Will old tub fit through existing openings to be removed from house?
  • Plumber and materials to install new bathtub
  • Cost of new bathtub and fixtures
  • Tile contractor and materials for matching tile to new unit
  • Additional problems created as result of replacing tub
Compared to replacing an old bathroom or shower, refinishing your bathtub will save you thousands of dollars.

Relining

Conventional wisdom is that no serious remodeler would even consider a liner. Because liners are basically a new skin that fits inside your existing bathtub, many of the same major remodeling steps need to be taken to adapt this liner to work in your house, including:
  • Arranging plumbing to work with placement of new liner.
  • Plumber and materials/fixtures.
  • Contractor to match surrounding tile/sheetrock to new liner.
  • Cost of liner ($700-800) and bathtub wall surround ($800-1000).
While liners may save money over replacing the entire unit, they are more of a band-aid and shorter term solution. Some other known and common issues with bathtub liners:
  • Trapped Water - If the caulking between the drain, fixtures, or wall surround cracks, water will become trapped between the liner and original tub. This creates an obnoxious odor, as well as mold and mildew because this water is usually stagnant. This can even eat away at structural elements and the liner-tub bonding agent.
  • Hollow Feeling - Poorly made liners do not fit perfectly flush with old bathtub, which creates a spongy and less stable feeling.
  • Look and Feel - Liners will feel like plastic, well, because they are! Unfortunately, this also causes them to flex and crack over time.
  • Smaller Bathtub - Because material is being added inside your existing tub, your bathtub or shower will be smaller than before.
Refinishing your bathtub can save $500-$1000 or more over the cost of relining.


Save Time

The average time it takes to complete necessary steps above to replacing a tub can take several weeks. Liners may take only 1-3 days to install, but also requires an initial trip to measure your bathtub, and then up to several weeks to order. If your home only has one bathtub, do you have the time and option to go elsewhere to take showers? In comparison, refinishing is only a 4-5 hour work process with a 24 hour cure time. Durability
